About Us

What’s the deal with Apiary?

Technically it’s Apiary for Practical Support, but we go by Apiary for short.

Apiary is a national hub for groups that provide logistical assistance – transportation, lodging, childcare, and more – to people seeking abortions. We make it easier for new and existing practical support organizations (PSOs) to grow sustainably by providing tactical tools, trainings, and resources. We also hold community spaces to connect existing organizations to each other and learn how they work, and what service gaps need to be filled.

Our goal is to support a well-functioning, collaborative, fully-resourced practical support ecosystem within the larger abortion access movement while advocating for increased awareness about this work.

We are deeply, unequivocally pro-abortion.

Our Work

  • 1. Tools & Resources

We make it easier for new and existing practical support organizations to grow sustainable capacity by providing tactical tools, training, and resources.

  • 2. Community

We create spaces for collaboration and communication among PSOs to enable better awareness of the organizations that exist, how they work, and what service gaps need to be filled.

  • 3. Advocate & Educate

We provide information and trainings about the need and impact of practical support to abortion access and reproductive justice movements as well as the general public.

Apiary Q&A

A’s to your q’s!

  • No – we are a hub for organizations that provide practical support to pool resources, knowledge, and create community.

We help the people who help the people.

If you are an abortion seeker who needs support accessing abortion care, you can find your local practical support group and contact them directly.

  • We are the organization practical support groups can lean on to stabilize, scale, and grow their operations to reach more people that need this critical care.

  • Yes we can! Fill out this interest form and we’ll get started.

  • An apiary is a group of beehives - or, as we like to think of it, a collective of individuals pooling their labor to make a large, intricate, complicated, beautiful support system.

A hive doesn’t thrive without all the worker bees collaborating and leaning on each other – neither do we.

  • Apiary is the collaborative vision of three co-founders: Odile Schalit of the Brigid Alliance, Diana Parker-Kafka of the Midwest Access Coalition, and Marisa Falcon, a nonprofit administration consultant and repro advocate.

In January 2021, Marisa began working on Apiary full time and Diana and Odile became Apiary’s first Advisory Committee members. In March of that year, Tessa joined Marisa on the team. In May, the Summit the founders dreamed of took place and in June the organization officially launched.

  • Practical support exists in other realms of public health and safety – refugee resettlement, trans health care, interpersonal violence, care for people battling cancer… the list goes on.

However, Apiary was built by three people who work within the abortion access movement and in response to the need for practical support to be named as a separate yet integral part of access.

So - we are a space by and for folks who provide practical support for people seeking abortions.

But! If you think anything we’re building could be helpful for your kind of practical support, feel free to ask!

  • Because practical support extends outside the world of reproductive health and care, and we want to leave the door open for expansion to other forms of practical support outside of abortion access, we instead frame our work through the lens of collective liberation rather than reproductive justice. We are deeply aligned with the values and principles of reproductive justice and stand in solidarity with leaders in the RJ movement.

  • Collective liberation is the principle that all oppressive struggles are interconnected and that no one is free until we are all free.

  • Yes we are! We are an independent, registered 501(c)(3).
