Position Summary
Apiary for Practical support is seeking a writer with experience writing for the abortion access movement with an intersectional perspective to edit and improve our existing website content, write new content for our website and social media, expand our newsletters from monthly to biweekly, and develop fundraising campaign materials. This is a up to nine-month contract position for an estimated 15 hours a week, ideally beginning in mid March 2024.
About Apiary for Practical Support
Apiary for Practical Support offers technical assistance to groups that provide logistical care to people seeking abortions. Collaborating with practical support organizations (PSOs) and community members, we co-create and exchange information, resources, and materials for folks to use and adapt. We offer non-judgmental, non-prescriptive thought partnership for PSOs and PS-curious movement workers seeking support on how to improve or expand their programs and operations. We create spaces for PSOs to be in relationship with one another and collaborate toward shared goals.
We are deeply, unequivocally pro-abortion.
Scope of Work
The Communications Consultant will work primarily with the Executive Director and Data & Communications Advisor to develop content. The Consultant will primarily be responsible for conceptualizing content and writing copy to support the Executive Director’s strategy. Below are the major pieces of work we intend to prioritize but this list is not exhaustive.
Website
Review all current existing content on Apiary’s website and provide any feedback re: clarity, structure, etc. If applicable, provide copy edits for the team to implement.
Expand Resource Library - one additional page per month
Create content for the News section such as op-eds, reactions to breaking news, organizational announcements
Social Media
Create copy for all social media posts highlighting any created materials (website posts, newsletters, etc), including post concepts and captions
Platforms: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn
Develop a series of evergreen content that can be used any point throughout the year
Newsletters
Write monthly newsletter
Launch second, short monthly newsletter to complement the current one and highlight other pieces of work and expand supporter reach.
Fundraising
Write welcome email series for new donor cultivation
Update donor letters across platforms
Create content (fundraising emails, landing pages, social media content, etc.) for June 2024 Dobbs fundraising campaign
The ideal person is:
An experienced nonprofit writer with particular knowledge and interest in the abortion access landscape
Able to quickly and easily pick up an organization’s “voice” and vision
Able to write compellingly and compassionately about a variety of topics
Collaborative and communicative - we want someone who can be a thought partner as well as able to execute
Timeline
This project is expected to take up to 9 months at 15-20 hours a week, starting in mid March 2024. Duration can be expanded or contracted based on weekly availability of the consultant.
Budget
There is a maximum budget of $35,000 for the project.

3-5 pieces highlighting an array of different types of writing - social media, newsletters, annual reports, fundraising campaigns, etc.
Any relationship you have to the abortion access movement either personally or professionally, if applicable;
Your proposed high-level approach to this RFP including the area(s) of work that you are equipped to address, the deliverable(s) you would provide, and a proposed/preliminary work plan to achieve the scope of work,
A resume, portfolio of work, or other material to show your relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Experience and success in social justice oriented writing, with preference for experience writing for reproductive health and justice and/or abortion access movements
Ability to distill complex ideas into succinct, clear content
Quality and clarity of the proposal
Hiring Timeline:
Proposal Submission Deadline: February 16, 2024
Evaluation Period: February 1 - February 29, 2024
Contract Award: No later than March 15, 2024
